Visitors Flock to Rememberance Day Ceromonies

11th Nov 2008

Hundreds of visitors to Scarborough hotels flocked to Remembrance Day services across Scarborough to pay their respects to lives lost during times of war.

Crowds gathered around the cenotaph on Oliver’s Mount to remember service personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The Rev Martyn Dunning led the service, which included hymns, prayer and music from the Salvation Army Band.

Several dignitaries including Scarborough Mayor Cllr Eileen Vickers and MP Robert Goodwill joined community representatives, veterans and other individuals to lay wreaths around the monument.

Rev Dunning told the Scarborough Evening News: “It’s an important annual occasion when together we thank God for the freedoms we have and for those whose sacrifice has given us these freedoms.

“It’s great that so many visitors to Scarborough hotels observe this day in this particular way. We’re grateful for their support.”

Others gathered at Queen Street Methodist Church for a service which was led by the Rev Geoff Bowell and the Rev Pam Jennings.

The service included a blessing of the wreaths and ceremony of the poppies.

Many of the congregation including the Scarborough Sea Cadets, standard bearers and wreath carriers marched from the church to the lifeboat house supported by the coastguard and police for a wreath laying ceremony.

It was great to see the number of military personnel and veterans joining in the service.
